Gillum House B&B
Homemade breads and muffins are Kathleen's specialty. A full breakfast (muffins, fruit, juices (OJ & a non-citric), entree, and fresh-roasted, fresh-ground coffee) is served at the time requested by our guests. We offer a choice of over 100 varieties of tea and coffee from at least 15 countries. See the breakfast in our photo and some of the dolls in the dining room cabinet. More dolls are found throughout the house (discreetly). Also featured are dolls made by the late Margaret Panek.
Children of all ages welcome, but they must bring at least 1 adult. Porta-crib, high chair, & spring-loaded canvas cots low to the floor are provided for children.
We are “Green”. We were awarded 5 green triangles by www.bestgreenhotels.com.
All paintings in the house (except the squirrel in Harris Room) are John Panek originals and are available for purchase.
The Gillum Room was named for the Gillum family who owned the house from 1918 until the 1970s. A replica of the Shinnston depot and a Lionel engine & tender give tribute to Troy Gillum's tenure as B & O Station Agent 1911 - 1957. The queen-size 4-poster bed with lovely duvet and down-filled comforter provide a setting for romance. We have provided a variety of romantic CD's for your listening pleasure. The Gillum Room has a private en suite bathroom w/claw-foot tub and also a 48-inch shower.
The Harris Room, with its "down-home" handmade quilts on the double bed with pillowtop mattress, is a feather-free room, perfect for anyone with allergies to feathers or down. The reading nook with large oak rocking chair, antique floor lamp, and bookrack make the Harris Room a favorite of many guests. TV w/VCR also.
The CD player and selection of CD's in each room provide music of many varieties (more CDs available in the Library).
In Rosi's Room, the lovely oak mantle at the now decorative fireplace, small rocking chair by the window, the twill-weave wool-drying basket made by your host, and original paintings create a comfortable and intimate room. The Windsor double bed with pillowtop mattress and down-filled comforter complete the intimate feeling of this room. We have removed (except for CD/radio/alarm) the 21st century distractions to better allow the old-fashioned art of conversation and relaxation.
Rosi's Room and the Harris Room share a bathroom that features a 60-inch shower. Large bath sheets are found in all bathrooms for the comfort of our guests. Luxurious robes are in the closets of each guest room.
The Library is also a business center for our business guests with copier. We now have Wi-Fi available from all guestrooms.
All books on the 2nd floor are to be "stolen" by our guests. Make your selections and enjoy them - they are not to be sent back. Books on the 1st floor are for perusal but remain at the Gillum House.
Packages that include a dinner and/or a packed lunch are available and in-room massage can be arranged. Anniversaries are treated as very special. Personalized gift certificates are available.
Overnight stabling for horses with escort to the stable is a service provided. Off-street cement parking and personalized routings are offered to our motorcycling guests (both Kathleen and John are former bikers). Shuttle service is available to our guests flying into North-Central West Virginia Airport or our hiking/biking rail-trail guests (see the photo for a glimpse of the rail-trail), 2 bicycles with helmets are available to our guests. We do not rent them - a donation to the Lord's Pantry Food Bank is suggested.
Shinnston is 6 miles west of I-79, halfway between Fairmont and Clarksburg. Gillum House is 1 block west of US Rt 19 in downtown Shinnston (but as quiet as the country), 4 blocks from the only Chapel of Perpetual Adoration in West Virginia, and 50 ft from the West Fork River Rail-Trail. Within 60 miles or less are 9 covered bridges, hand-blown glass, wineries, drive-in theaters.... Ask us about the camel.
